EBay's New
Classified Ads Feature.
If you are subscribed to
any eBay marketer's mailing list who knows their stuff you have
probably already heard about eBay's classified ads feature. This is
something
eBay.com
have
been running for a few month's now and I was going to write about this
exciting new feature late last year but I thought I would test it
first and share my results with you.
If you don't know what
an eBay classified ad is it is basically a new selling format
eBay.com
has added. Although you don't actually sell anything, you just
advertise the item or service you are selling and people contact you
through eBay. To check out this new feature go to
eBay.com and click on 'sell' and you
will see a new 'Ad Format' option. (You may have to click
List using the original
Sell Your Item form).
If you want to see some
classified ads that are already up and running
click here. You will see most of the
ads are running in the 'everything else' category. This means most of
the products offered are info products such as eBooks. Good
news for anyone who sells information :-). But most importantly is the
fact classified ads
show up in eBay searches.
The feature is so new
that there are no concrete rules for running a classified ad but here
are what eBay say about the new Ad Format. If you want to see the page
on eBay
Ad Format
Use Ad Format listings to list
items, services, or properties for sale in order to generate multiple
leads. This unique format does not enable buyers and sellers to
transact online through eBay nor is eBay Feedback available.
Ad Format has the following
features:
- List
your asking price. No bidding takes place.
-
Interested buyers fill out a contact form, and their information is
sent to you.
- List
your item, service, or property for a specific period of time.
- Revise
item-specific information in your ad at any time while the ad is
active.
Fees
Fees vary depending on the item
category and listing duration.
Rules
The seller must treat the buyer's
contact information in full compliance with eBay's Privacy Policy.
This policy prohibits sharing the buyer's information with third
parties as well as use of the buyer's information for any purpose
other than communicating with the buyer about the item, unless
expressly permitted to do so by the buyer. Failure to comply with this
policy can result in the seller's suspension or expulsion from the
eBay Community.
This is the most exciting part:
"Use Ad Format listings to list
items, services, or properties for sale in order to generate
multiple leads". And "List your item, service, or
property".
So is it possible to use this new
feature to build a mailing list? Well I would think so but as this
feature is so new and the rules seem so grey it's a little hard to
tell. However, external links are allowed as long as the item you are
promoting cannot be bought from the external link. So an opt-in form
may be allowed as long as it is related to the product you are
selling.
My results:
All I have done so far is list my
members
package
as a classified ad. The result was 429 hits and over 40 enquiries over
a 30 day period. As the ad only cost $10.00 this means I was getting
targeted traffic for less than 2.5 cents per click. All I had
to do was make one sale to be in profit. If you have ever ran a Google
AdWords campaign you will know 2.5 cents per click is unbelievable.
So if you have any premium products
or services to offer you should seriously consider running a
classified ad. I have a couple of ads running now and I plan to run a
lot more in the future and at $10.00 for a 30 day ad it's not going to
break the bank. I will keep you posted when I have some more results
to share.
As this feature is so new and the
rules are a little grey at the moment I would recommend you use
eBay.com's live help feature or
contact eBay support when your ad is up and running if you are unsure
about breaking any rules. If there are any problems eBay will let you
know so you can change your ad.
I would also like to point out you
can revise your ads as much as you like. This is perfect for testing
and tweaking so you can play with your ads to find out what works
best.
So make sure you check out this new
feature, have a look at some current ads to get a feel for the system
and make sure you don't miss out on this incredible opportunity eBay
have provided.
